Don’t Flush It!

Even the strongest toilets may not be as strong as you believe. What you flush down the toilet plays a role in maintaining the performance of the plumbing throughout your home. At the end of the day, there are truly only two things that should be flushed down the toilet: human waste and toilet paper. Flushing things like hair from a brush or q-tips can cause some serious clogs or backups over time.

Below is our list of the 4 things you should never flush down the toilet:

Dental Floss

Believe it or not, this harmless string can get caught in your plumbing and slowly cause buildups. Floss has the ability of catching on tree roots or on offset section of piping. Additionally, most floss is not biodegradable, meaning it will not breakdown in landfills and may cause potential harm in the future.

Kitty Litter

Aside from flushing a cat’s fecal matter and urine down the toilet, kitty litter is mainly composed of clay and sand. Both sand and clay can cause some serious problems for your plumbing. Also, cat waste can carry toxins and parasites.

Feminine Hygiene Products

Feminine products are a major culprit of clogs and backups. These products are meant to absorb moisture, meaning one flushed down the toilet will do nothing but continue to absorb moisture. For this reason, tampons, applicators or sanitary pads should never make it to your toilet.

Wipes Claiming to Be ‘Flushable’,

Even though you may purchase a wipe that is said to be flushable, you should always avoid flushing these down your toilet. Any kind of wipe can easily end up getting caught in your pipes and cause a major backup. Next time you purchase flushable wipes, be sure the used ones make their way to the trash.
